    Timberline’s hiking program, from its earliest days when we first hiked the Grand Canyon, has always been driven, for better or worse, by our own personal pursuit of adventure. In the season ahead, that pursuit propels us to the Pacific Northwest, where we’ll launch our new Rogue River Wilderness Hike, a 6-day backcountry inn-to-inn adventure along the Wild and Scenic Rogue River in southern Oregon.

    Also new for 2009 is something we should have included years ago. We’re adding a 2-day “Extender” option to our Big Bend National Park Hike to explore the amazing formations of nearby Carlsbad Caverns National Monument in southeastern New Mexico. Our Odyssey Series for Hikers continues in 2009, although we’ve decided to offer our 11-day, 105-mile Cotswold Hike in England one final time.

    In 2009, Timberline will offer 29 separate and distinct itineraries. At the heart of all of our hiking programs is the same spirit of adventure which has been the driving force for our entire program since our beginnings 27 years ago. We are committed in our hiking program to creating true backcountry, wilderness adventures that fall just short of actual extended backpacking trips.

   All hikes are inn-to-inn experiences and not camping, but, on occasion, we’ll each carry whatever we may need for an overnight stay at a backcountry lodge accessible only by foot. Important components of several of our hikes are the exceptional opportunities to spend overnights at remote lodges like the Phantom Ranch on the floor of the Grand Canyon and Havasupai Lodge in Supai village deep within Havasu Canyon, and the magical Shadow Lake Lodge in the heart of the Canadian Rockies wilderness.
