Tour Cost: $2,895 |
In the past when we offered our separate 7-day North and South Oregon Coast tours, we often were asked which section of the coast was our favorite. What an impossible question to answer! The only honest response was— “all of it.” Nothing compares with the Oregon coast—nothing; from Astoria to Brookings, it’s the absolute best!
And so, in the season ahead, we’ll do the whole thing—Astoria to Brookings and beyond into northern California, including Crescent City’s beautiful Pebble Beach Drive and the North Coast’s towering redwoods.
Our Oregon Coast Classic assembles in Hillsboro to the west of Portland. We’ll ride to the Coast on Day l, tracing the course of the Nehalem River as we head for the historic seaport of Astoria. We’ll have an opportunity to explore Astoria the following morning and tour nearby Fort Clatsop, where the Lewis and Clark Expedition wintered in 1805 during its travels through the newly acquired Louisiana Territory. We’ll continue south along the coast to the charming seaside village of Cannon Beach and an oceanfront overnight at the Surfsand Resort. Tillamook, site of the largest cheese factory in the west, is our destination for Day 3. Along the way, we’ll visit the Nehalem Bay Winery and later tour the cheese factory in Tillamook.
The Oregon Coast in its grandest form is our setting for Day 4 as we ride the Three Capes Scenic Route on the way to Lincoln City and an oceanfront overnight at the Shilo Inn. We’ll hug the shoreline throughout Day 5 enroute to Florence. The day is a progression of state parklands, created to protect the entire length of the Oregon shore, and an almost endless string of quaint seaside villages. We’ll spend the evening at the Driftwood Shores Resort at the gateway to the Oregon Dunes National Seashore. It’s on to Bandon on Day 6 and an evening at the Sunset Lodge, perched on a headwall high above the ocean.
From Bandon, we’ll ride to Gold Beach and a layover day that offers a wide variety of optional activities, including whitewater rafting, an historic mail boat tour upstream on the Rogue River, and yes, even a great cycling opportunity along the Rogue. Another viable option is a lazy day on the beach.
It’s back on the bikes on Day 9 as we continue south from Gold Beach through Brookings and on into California. Our approach to Crescent City along Pebble Beach Drive is one of the many highlights of this day. We’ll ride from Crescent City early on our final morning and visit the magnificent redwoods of California’s North Coast. Lunch at the Palm Café in Orick is a must and we’ll then ride on to Arcata, where our adventure concludes. (Our van will return to Portland for those who need that shuttle immediately following the tour’s conclusion July 20. Note also that airline service is available from Eureka/Arcata airport)
Total Mileage – 557
