Black Hills of South Dakota
These photos are courtesy of Bruce Gelin.

Of course, Mt. Rushmore has appeared in many popular forms, including advertising for bicycle helmets. The Italian at the upper right says "Giro presents the perfect mountain bike helmet -- the Hammerhead Granite."

Between Mt. Rushmore and Custer State Park is one of the most beautiful roads you could ever bicycle, complete with rustic tunnels and "pigtail bridges."

The Black Hills are geologically interesting, and the road builders preserved the rustic nature of the area.

The Cathedral Spires on the Needles Highway are remarkable upthrusts of the
granite which lifted the Black Hills out of the surrounding sandstone plain.

We watched in amazement as this bus made its way through the "Eye of the Needle"
at the summit of the Needles Highway (it took about three minutes).

The Sylvan Lake Lodge, about a mile from the Eye of the Needle at 6,300 feet elevation,
provided beautiful, comfortable accomodations and a great dining room.

Here Dick is demonstrating that he is qualified to go on the special Spelunking Tour of Jewel Cave -- you have to be able to fit through this obstacle. We didn't do that tour -- ours was all walking on two feet, no crawling.

Jewel Cave has spectacular colors and formations.
